Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Tapti Basin Mega Recharge Project on May 10th. The historic agreement was signed by Chief Ministers Dr. Mohan Yadav and Devendra Fadnavis at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre in Bhopal.
This ambitious project, costing ₹19,244 crores, is being hailed as the world’s largest groundwater recharge project. The agreement was finalised during the 28th meeting of the Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra Interstate Control Board.
The mega project will provide irrigation facilities to approximately 123,000 hectares in Madhya Pradesh and 2,37,000 hectares in Maharashtra. The project includes construction of a diversion weir on the MP-Maharashtra border and development of right and left bank canals in both states.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav claims this project will serve as the lifeline for the Malwa-Nimar region. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, stated that the project will provide drinking water to Nagpur City for the next 30–40 years.
The project will ensure water supply to northeastern Maharashtra while particularly benefiting Burhanpur and Khandwa districts in Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra’s Akola, Buldhana, Jalgaon, and Amravati districts will also benefit from this scheme.
Both states will now request the central government declare it a national project, enabling 90% funding from the Centre. This groundbreaking initiative could provide a permanent solution to water scarcity issues in both states.
The project encompasses four main water structures and will transform the agricultural landscape of the region. With its implementation, farmers in both states can expect improved irrigation facilities and enhanced agricultural productivity.
