India could lose 6.6 percent of its rice harvest for every 1°C the planet warms — more than triple earlier estimates. Rice feeds nearly two-thirds of the country. The new figure comes from the largest real-world dataset yet built to answer a stubborn question: how much damage does extreme heat, as opposed to average warming, actually do to rice?
The study, published in Science Advances, was led by scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, with contributions from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Researchers compared field-warming experiments at 214 sites across rice-growing regions with outputs from seven major crop models used to forecast global food supply.
The gap between the two was stark. Models predicted a 3.8 percent yield loss under 1°C of warming. Real fields lost 8.1 percent — more than double.
Heat Above 30°C Does the Damage
The study pinpoints the cause: exposure to temperatures above 30°C, not rising averages, drives most of the loss. At more than 70 percent of the sites studied, high-temperature exposure alone accounted for over half of the total yield damage recorded.
Lead author Yiwei Jian, a researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, said existing crop models miss this because they fail to capture heat damage during rice’s reproductive stage — the narrow window when panicles and grains form and the plant is most fragile.
South Asia Faces the Steepest Losses
Regional projections worsened sharply once researchers accounted for real-world heat exposure. For Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, the yield-loss estimate rose from 2.1 to 6.6 percent. For Thailand, the Philippines and Myanmar, it rose from 3.7 to 7.7 percent. South and Southeast Asia now rank as the most exposed rice-growing regions on Earth.
A March analysis in Nature Food warned that half of crop production in low-latitude regions could become unviable once warming crosses 1.5°C. That study projected crop diversity would shrink across 52 percent of global cropland at 2°C of warming, and 56 percent at 3°C.
A May study using six decades of data, from 1966 to 2016, found that each 1°C of warming cut India’s average crop yield by roughly 8 percent nationwide. Pearl millet fell by up to 19 percent. Maize dropped more than 16 percent. In the hardest-hit districts, yields collapsed by as much as 39 percent.
Rice breeders have spent decades optimizing crops for slow, steady warming. This study says that’s the wrong target. The real threat arrives in short, brutal bursts above 30°C — and current forecasting tools aren’t built to see it coming.
