Farmers Reject Centre's Offer, Says 'It's Not A Time For A Committee'

The meeting between the farmers’ representatives and the government on Tuesday proved to be failed for many. Government suggested to form a committee to hold discussion over the farm laws, however this idea was rejected by the farmer’s body. This is the second meeting held between the protesting farmers and the government since last week. It was held under Railway minister Mr. Piyush Goyal and Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar. The three member team of ministers was also joined by junior industry minister Som Prakash.

Though the government appears firm on it’s laws, the farmers argue that they have come with all ration and resources for at least 4 months. The farmers said they agreed to talk on condition of no other pre condition. 35 farmers, who held discussion with centre, demands to repeal the new laws.

“We’ll demand the new laws be repealed and a law be brought on MSP. If the government doesn’t agree, the protests will continue,” Jagjit Singh Dallewal of the Bharatiya Kisan Union said.

Farmers gained support from Swaraj India founder and farmer’s leader Yogendra Yadav. Bhim army chief Chandrashekhar Azad also joined the protesting farmers today. Shaheen bhagh’s famous Bilkis daadi also joined them. Punjabi Industry’s artists like actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, singer Guru Randhawa, comedian Kapil Sharma and various others showered solidarity with protesting farmers.

Several regional artists like Deep Sidhu and Harbhajan Mann arrived at border along with farmers. Deep Sidhu in a viral video talks to a police officer over mishandling of the protesters. However, on the same, has been targeted by trolls as Khalistani. Although social media and mainstream media seems divided, atleast three people have died since the protests started. A large number of women farmers have also travelled to reach the capital.

Thousands of farmers, facing water cannons, tear gas and chilling winters, celebrated Guruparv at Delhi border recently. The agitation grew after two months of sit-in protests against the three farm bills passed by parliament. The matter has been covered widely by the global media, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau voicing in favour of the protesters.
