Congress leader Supriya Shrinate claimed on social media that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name appears in documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Shrinate shared a screenshot of an email allegedly written by Epstein on July 9, 2017.
The email states, “The Indian Prime Minister Modi took advice and danced and sang in Israel for the benefit of the US President. They had met a few weeks ago. IT WORKED!” according to Shrinate’s post.
Shrinate described the reference as “extremely shameful” and said it raises serious questions about the Prime Minister’s conduct and associations.
What Congress alleges
Shrinate connected the email to Modi’s official visits in mid-2017. She pointed out that Modi visited the United States on June 25-26, 2017, where he met President Donald Trump. Days later, from July 4-6, 2017, Modi visited Israel for his first official trip to the country. Epstein wrote the email three days after Modi’s Israel trip ended.
In her social media post, Shrinate claimed the timeline suggests Modi took advice from Epstein during his America visit and then acted on it during the Israel trip. She alleged this shows a “very deep and long-standing connection” between Modi and Epstein.
Congress leader Pawan Khera also raised questions about the alleged reference. He described it as a “matter of national shame” and said any proximity between India’s Prime Minister and Epstein raised “serious questions of judgment, transparency, and diplomatic propriety.”
Khera asked what advice Modi allegedly took from Epstein, what benefit was provided to the US president during the Israel visit, and what “IT WORKED” meant in the email. He also questioned how Modi knew Epstein and what the nature of their relationship was.
The Congress party stated that the reference affects “national dignity and international reputation” and demanded that the Prime Minister provide a detailed explanation to the nation.
Government responds
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal dismissed the claims on Saturday. “We have seen reports of an email message from the so-called Epstein files that has a reference to the Prime Minister and his visit to Israel. Beyond the fact of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Israel in July 2017, the rest of the allusions in the email are little more than trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal, which deserve to be dismissed with the utmost contempt,” Jaiswal said.
The MEA spokesperson did not address the specific questions raised by Congress leaders about the alleged connection or the meaning of the email.
The Prime Minister’s Office and the Bharatiya Janata Party have not issued separate statements on the allegations. There was no immediate response from BJP spokespersons to the Congress claims.
What are the Epstein Files
The Epstein Files are documents released by the US Justice Department under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The latest batch, containing three million additional documents, was uploaded recently to the department’s online repository.
The files include photographs, videos, court filings, FBI and DOJ records, news clippings, and emails related to Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. These documents have been accumulated over years of investigation into Epstein’s activities.
Epstein was a former financier with connections to prominent figures across politics, business, and entertainment. He died by suicide in a New York jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. He had been accused of running a network that sexually abused and trafficked underage girls.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act required the Justice Department to produce all records related to Epstein and Maxwell by December 19. The releases are part of an ongoing effort to provide transparency about Epstein’s activities and associations.
Names appearing in these documents do not by themselves establish wrongdoing, as the files contain various forms of correspondence and references collected over years of investigation. Legal experts have noted that being mentioned in the files could mean anything from direct contact to being discussed in passing.
