Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for heavy rain and snowfall as two active western disturbances converge over the region. The India Meteorological Department issued warnings on December 20, 2025, signaling the first major weather change after weeks of dry conditions.

Dual Weather Systems Target the Region

Two western disturbances are currently driving the weather changes. The first has formed as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 kilometers altitude directly over Jammu and surrounding areas. The second extends up to 5.8 kilometers over southwest Iran and neighboring regions, with its effects reaching the Kashmir valley.

A subtropical western jet stream is also active over northern India, with wind speeds reaching 105 knots. This combination has significantly increased the likelihood of precipitation across the union territory.

Heavy Precipitation Expected on December 21

The weather department forecasts scattered rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the next four days. Particularly heavy rain and snowfall are expected in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on December 21.

The intensity of precipitation will vary across different altitude zones, with higher reaches receiving substantial snowfall while lower areas experience heavy rainfall.

Traffic Disruptions Anticipated

Mountain roads are expected to become slippery and hazardous as snow accumulates. The meteorological department has warned that traffic disruptions are likely, especially on major highways connecting different regions of the union territory.

Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys during peak precipitation hours and to carry emergency supplies if travel is essential.

Extended Weather Pattern

While December 21 will see the heaviest precipitation, scattered rain and snowfall will continue throughout the western Himalayan region for four consecutive days. This extended weather pattern marks a significant departure from the prolonged dry spell that preceded it.

The moisture from these western disturbances will provide much-needed relief to water sources and agriculture in the region, though it will also create temporary disruptions to daily life.

Drivers must exercise extreme caution on mountain roads and use tire chains where necessary. Emergency services are on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.

The weather department continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue updated warnings as the western disturbances progress across the region.
