The beautiful pictures it presents make it one of the must-see places in Srinagar, Kashmir. One has to reach early in the morning to see the bustling floating market.

Floating gardens in the natural wetlands of Srinagar are a major source of vegetable cultivation and these fresh vegetables are sold on floating shikara boats on the lake.

This market is thronged by vendors with shikaras laden with vegetables and the market runs for a few hours from 5 am to 8 am.

Most of the produce sold here is grown in the floating gardens on Dal Lake. The rich ecosystem of this wetland produces lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, water chestnuts and of course the famous nadru (lotus roots, a delicacy in the Kashmir Valley).

There is no better way to witness Dal life than from the comfort of a shikara. After the floating market is over, take a leisurely two-hour stroll through the local canals and you’re sure to come back spellbound.

Visitors often stay on houseboats, which are surprisingly a British legacy. During the Dogra rule of Kashmir, the British were not allowed to build houses in the valley.

So, to get around this rule, they commissioned the construction of luxurious houseboats, each with elaborate walnut wood carvings and lavish open decks.
