The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning over the development of Cyclone Dana in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is anticipated to form from a low-pressure system now located over the Andaman Sea, originating from an upper air cyclonic circulation detected in the region.
Chronology of Development
- October 22: A low-pressure system is expected to strengthen into a depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjacent northern Andaman Sea.
- October 23: Cyclone Dana has intensified more over the East Central Bay of Bengal.
- October 24: a cyclone is expected to arrive in the northwest Bay of Bengal, along the shores of Odisha and West Bengal, around morning.
Climatic Conditions
- Inclement weather persists over the Andaman Sea until October 21, accompanied by moderate to turbulent sea conditions.
- Central Bay of Bengal will have rough to very rough sea conditions from October 22-24, with wind speeds ranging from 35 to 45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h.
- Comparable circumstances are anticipated in the northern Bay of Bengal from October 24-25, with wind velocities of 45–55 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h.
Adviesries for Fishermen
Fishermen are cautioned against entering the Andaman Sea until October 21, the Central Bay of Bengal from October 22 to 24, and the northern Bay of Bengal from October 24 to 25.
Prudent regulation is recommended for maritime, port, and offshore and onshore operations during the impacted timeframe.
Optimal Conditions for Cyclone Formation
Sea surface temperature: 29-32°C in the Bay of Bengal, exceeding typical levels. Tropical cyclone heat potential: Exceeding 100 kJ/cm² in the northeastern Bay of Bengal is regarded as elevated and conducive to storm formation.
The IMD persistently observes the situation, issuing frequent updates regarding the cyclone’s advancement and its effects on coastal areas. Residents and officials in the impacted regions are urged to be informed and implement essential safeguards as Cyclone Dana nears the coastline.
