The webinar was organized by the University’s Center for Women’s Studies and was addressed by Athar Zia, a professor at the University of Colorado. As well as being a poet, Athar Zia is also the author of several books and has written a book on the situation in Kashmir. In this regard, he was specially invited to the seminar.
The administration of Jawaharlal Nehru University quoted the webinar as saying, “It was written on the notice board that the talks will focus on the culture of gender resistance in the part of Kashmir occupied by India.” And it was the Indian occupation that was questioned, which was taken seriously.
M Jagdish Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, “This is a highly objectionable and provocative topic, which calls into question the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. JNU is a platform for such objectionable webinars.”

He added that action was taken as soon as it became known and “it was ordered to be canceled. The faculty members who organized the webinar gave permission from the administration before planning such an event.” The matter is being investigated.”
The Center for Women’s Studies wrote in a Facebook post that the webinar that Athar Zia was going to address has been canceled and more information will be provided soon.
Professor Athar Zia is a Professor of Political Anthropology at the University of Colorado, USA, and is a well-known author with poetry. Her book on Kashmir, Resisting Disappearance, Military Occupation and Women’s Activism in Kashmir, came out recently and was to be discussed in this webinar.
It was also to discuss how women, in general, have been affected since India repealed Article 370, which gives special powers to Kashmir, in 2019.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of JNU unit wrote a written complaint to the station house officer of Vasant Kunj in the national capital Delhi to take “legal cognizance” against the officials concerned.
In the letter along with the complaint subject against the anti-national webinar organized by the Center for Women’s Studies, School of Social Sciences at JNU, the ABVP JNU Unit wrote, “We would like to inform your right that this as a part of the CWS webpage. The webinar has addressed the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as Indian Occupied Kashmir. This is despite the fact that the Government of India has repeatedly claimed Kashmir as an integral part and territory of India.”
Further, the letter states that the university should be a convergence point for ‘anti-national discourse’ and webinars if such ‘objectionable and provocative’ subjects are conducted at the cost of ‘sovereignty and territorial integrity of independent India. could.
