Research has found that tomato juice has special properties that can kill harmful bacteria like ‘Salmonella Typhi’, which causes typhoid fever in humans. Scientists believe that tomatoes have great antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, making them very good for health.
Tomatoes can eliminate typhoid fever
A recent study confirmed that these properties in tomatoes can also kill ‘Salmonella Typhi’. In addition, the study found that tomato juice can fight against harmful bacteria that harm the digestive system and urinary tract.
‘Salmonella Typhi’ is a dangerous bacteria that mainly affects humans and causes typhoid fever. The results of this study were published in Microbiology Spectrum, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
The study tested four antimicrobial peptides in fresh-ground tomato juice against ‘Salmonella Typhi’. Two of these peptides were effective at killing the bacteria. After two hours, there was a significant reduction in the number of ‘Salmonella Typhi’ bacteria. After 24 hours, the tomato juice had completely killed the bacteria.

The researchers also tested if tomato juice could kill other harmful bacteria that affect the human digestive and urinary tracts. They found that the antimicrobial peptides in tomato juice could damage the bacteria’s membranes, stopping their growth. After 24 hours in tomato juice, none of the tested bacteria were found.

They looked at the tomato’s genetic material to find the antimicrobial peptides responsible. These are tiny proteins that can break down the protective layer around bacteria.
The researchers found that two out of four potential antimicrobial peptides were effective against ‘Salmonella Typhi’. They then tested these peptides against other common types of ‘Salmonella Typhi’ in places where typhoid fever is often found. They found that tomato juice was also effective against these other types.
The researchers also used computer models to understand how the antibacterial peptides kill ‘Salmonella Typhi’ and other harmful bacteria in the gut. They found that tomato juice is also effective against these other bacteria, which can harm people’s digestive and urinary systems.
Polish scientists found that plants with the Solanum gene, including tomatoes, possess special compounds that could be potentially used to make cancer medicines. The Frontiers in Pharmacology journal published this study.
