Ground Report | New Delhi: Sultanpur may be named; After changing the name of Faizabad to Ayodhya, now its neighbouring district Sultanpur may soon be renamed as ‘Kush Bhawanpur’ after Kush, the son of the Hindu deity Lord Rama. The Uttar Pradesh Revenue Board has sent a proposal to change the name of Sultanpur to the state government and it can be decided in the next cabinet meeting.

Sultanpur may be named

Citing the historical records of the District Gazetteer, Sultanpur district administration has said in its report that after 1300 AD the name of this city was changed to ‘Sultanpur’.

If the proposal is accepted, Sultanpur will be the third district to be renamed in the Yogi Adityanath government. Earlier Faizabad was changed to Ayodhya and Allahabad to Prayagraj. Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency is represented by former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.

Before the elections, many BJP leaders and district panchayats led by BJP leaders have intensified the demand for the renaming of districts and cities. It is being told that Firozabad Zilla Panchayat has passed a proposal to change the name of the district to Chandranagar, Aligarh Zilla Panchayat to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh and Mainpuri Zilla Panchayat district to Mayan Nagari.

Minister of State in the state government, Gulab Devi has been advocating for changing the name of Sambhal. There is a demand to rename Sambhal as Prithviraj Nagar or Kalki Nagar.

Name change process

BJP state spokesperson Naveen Srivastava has submitted a demand letter to the Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya to change the name of Ghazipur district to Gadhipuri. Brijesh Singh, BJP MLA from Deoband in Saharanpur is demanding to change the name of Deoband to Devvrind.

Shahjahanpur BJP MLA Veer Vikram Singh has been advocating renaming the Prince Khudaganj block after the freedom fighter, Thakur Roshan Singh. At the same time, there has been a demand to change the name of the township to Vashishth Nagar and Mirzapur to Vindhya Dham.

The state and central governments have been changing the names of districts, cities, and prestigious places in the past. The Yogi government has changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya. The name of Mughalsarai Railway Junction was changed to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
