Madhya Pradesh experienced thick fog across more than 20 districts on Thursday morning after recent hailstorms and rain subsided. The fog reduced visibility significantly, with some areas seeing less than 50 meters of clear sight. Many districts remained under a dense fog cover until 10 am, disrupting daily life and transportation.
Gwalior and Datia recorded the most severe fog conditions. Pachmarhi, the state’s only hill station, registered the lowest temperature at 5.8 degrees Celsius overnight. The weather department confirmed that night temperatures have dropped across the state following the recent weather systems.
New Weather System Approaches
A fresh weather system will activate over northwest India from January 30. This system will reach Madhya Pradesh within one or two days, bringing another spell of rain and possible hailstorms in early February. The meteorological department has issued warnings for several districts.
The new system will cause temperatures to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Many cities will see minimum temperatures falling below 10 degrees again. The maximum temperatures will also decrease, intensifying the cold wave conditions across the state.
Over 30 districts received rainfall in the past 24 hours, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, and Gwalior. Gwalior recorded the highest rainfall at two and a half inches. Hailstorms struck eight districts, damaging wheat, gram, and mustard crops significantly.
Schools in Gwalior closed for classes up to eighth grade due to continuous rain and cold conditions. The Gwalior administration took this decision after temperatures dropped sharply following persistent rainfall.
Temperature Variations Across Cities
| City | Temperature (°C) | Weather Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Pachmarhi | 5.8 | Cold, possible fog |
| Dhar | 8.0 | Dense fog, cold wave |

Fog will continue affecting northern parts of the state on January 30. Districts including Gwalior, Bhind, Morena, and Datia will experience fog cover on January 31. By February 1, major cities like Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain will also face fog conditions.
Residents should prepare for colder nights and reduced visibility during morning hours. The weather department advises farmers to protect crops from potential hail damage. Cold winds and fog will persist for at least three more days before the next rainfall system arrives.
