The Central Government has appointed Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. His appointment will begin on May 24, 2025, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait on May 23.
The notification states: “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President appoints Shri Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to perform the duties of the Chief Justice with effect from 24.05.2025, consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Suresh Kumar Kait on 23.05.2025.”
Who is Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva?
Justice Sachdeva was born on December 26, 1964, in Delhi. He completed his schooling from Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, in 1982. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, in 1985. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1988.
He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi on August 1, 1988. He practiced law before the Supreme Court of India, Delhi High Court, and various district courts in Delhi. In 1995, he qualified as an Advocate-on-Record for the Supreme Court.
Justice Sachdeva served as Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India for over 20 years. He also worked as a Senior Panel Lawyer for the Union of India, representing the government in many cases for more than 10 years.
In July 2011, the Delhi High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate.
He has also trained lawyers across India in advocacy skills through the Indo-British Advocacy Skills project. His training covered witness examination and cross-examination and case argument skills. Advocates from several high courts, including Delhi, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, and Manipur, benefited from his training.
In 1992, Justice Sachdeva attended the Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He worked with solicitors and barristers in England during this course.
Academic achievements and awards
He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013, and became a permanent judge on March 18, 2015. He was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 30, 2024.
Justice Sachdeva holds several academic achievements and awards. He was a merit lister at Delhi University for his law exams in 1988. He received a British Council Scholarship to represent India at the Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course in 1992. He also won second prize in the Advocates-on-Record examination of the Supreme Court in 1995.
Other awards include the National prize by the Directorate of Education, Delhi, in 1985-86, and the Best Student Award for computer courses at NIIT.
