The central government has given ₹400 crore to widen 23 major roads in Indore. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has started the work after clearing key obstructions.

The road from Chandrabhaga to Kalalakui Masjid is now under construction. This stretch will be widened to 80 feet. Earlier, the road width ranged from 40 to 60 feet, causing traffic bottlenecks. Now, the entire road will have a uniform width.

Last month, the IMC removed 25 illegal structures from this stretch. Some locals opposed the move, but officials say the new road will improve traffic flow. It will also ease the route between Gangwal Bus Stand and Sarvate Bus Stand—two of the busiest points in the city.

Before laying the road foundation, teams are digging up the area to install sewer lines and Narmada water pipelines. They’re also placing storm water drains to prevent future waterlogging. Officials say this step will avoid digging again after the road is built.

The area between Chandrabhaga and Kalalakui Masjid has a slope and higher elevation. To tackle water drainage issues, large underground pipes are being laid. This will stop rainwater from collecting during monsoon.

Other roads in the city will also be upgraded under this ₹400 crore plan. The focus is on roads listed in Indore’s Master Plan. IMC has already started clearing blockages from several routes.

Work will also begin soon on roads connecting Indore to Ujjain. The Simhastha fair will be held in Ujjain after three years, and the city expects a large number of visitors. So, MR-4 and MR-12 roads—major routes to Ujjain—will be upgraded first.

The Indore Development Authority is handling the MR-12 project. This route is critical for managing festival traffic and reducing pressure on city roads.

The Municipal Corporation aims to complete sewer and water line work in about six weeks. After that, road-laying work will pick up speed.

These projects are expected to ease daily commutes, reduce traffic jams in central Indore, and prepare the city for future events.
