A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, causing temporary tsunami warnings. The epicenter was about 20 miles (32 km) north of Honduras and 130 miles (209km) southwest of the Cayman Islands, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were felt across multiple countries, but no significant damage or casualties have been reported.
Tsunami warnings issued & lifted
After the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for over a dozen countries, warning of possible three-meter (10-foot) waves. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were also under advisory. However, a few hours later, officials confirmed the threat had passed. The Cayman Islands government urged coastal residents to move inland, but there were no reports of major disruptions.
Although the major tsunami threat has subsided, US authorities warned of minor sea level fluctuations of up to 30 cm (11.8 inches). Coastal residents should remain cautious.
This earthquake is the largest in the region since a 7.2-magnitude quake hit Haiti in 2021. According to USGS, the area is prone to significant seismic activity due to its location along the Caribbean and North American tectonic plate boundary. In 2018, a similar 7.5-magnitude quake caused minor damage and a small tsunami.
“Large earthquakes in this region are not unusual. Fortunately, due to their offshore location, the impact on land is often limited,” said a USGS spokesperson.
During the initial uncertainty, local governments in the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico advised people to stay away from the water. Authorities in Honduras urged residents to remain alert and avoid beaches as a precaution.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed no tsunami threats for the mainland United States. Officials continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
