The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Andaman-Nicobar Islands and adjoining areas of the southeast Bay of Bengal due to cyclonic circulation of the upper air. This cyclonic circulation extends to upper levels, trending southwestwards with height.
The authorities have placed district-level yellow watches over West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata and Odisha’s Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Balasore, Jajpur, Khurda, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj during this two-day duration, due to the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
IMD predicts heavy rains, Possible cyclone
The IMD predicts heavy rains in parts of West Bengal due to this low pressure and cyclonic circulation. However, it is not yet confirmed whether this will form into a cyclone. The IMD has currently indicated that a depression or deep depression is likely to form.
The IMD forecasts light to moderate rain in most parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today, November 14, and in many areas over the next five days. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are also expected in some parts of these areas.
Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Yanam and Rayalaseema are expected to experience heavy rain and thundershowers with strong winds today and tomorrow.
On November 15, light to moderate rain is predicted over Ganga coastal areas in West Bengal and parts of coastal districts of Odisha. On November 16, light rain is expected in the coastal areas of Ganga in West Bengal and many coastal areas of Odisha, with heavy rain in some parts.
Cyclone warning for northeastern states
The cyclone is also expected to affect Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Light to moderate rain is expected in many parts of these states, with chances of heavy rain in some areas of South Assam and East Meghalaya on November 17.
In view of the cyclonic activity, fishermen are advised to stay away from the sea. The IMD predicts wind speeds of 40 to 45 km per hour today in the south-east Bay of Bengal and adjacent Andaman Sea, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lankan coasts, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area. The wind speed may increase up to 55 km per hour, making these areas unsafe for fishing or any business-related activities.
