Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is S Somnath new ISRO chief; The Center’s government on Thursday appointed S Somnath, Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) as the next head of the Indian Space and Research Organization (Isro).

He has been instrumental in the development of the GSLV Mk-III launcher and was the team leader for the integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) during the early phases of its career.

S. Somnath has been instrumental in the development of India’s most important space vehicle, the GSLV MK-III. The GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) could not be built in India, so the Western nations stopped providing the technology. Amidst so many inconveniences, India has come up with GSLV and its latest versions. This type of rocket allows India to launch heavier satellites.

Who is S Somnath new ISRO chief

Graduated in mechanical engineering from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, he joined VSSC in 1985. He was project manager of GSLV Mk-III from June 2010 to 2014. He was Deputy Director of the Entity of ‘Structures’ at VSSC and also Deputy Director of the ‘Entity of Spatial Planning and Propulsion’ at VSSC until November 2014.

Somnath is known for his contributions to launch vehicle design, particularly in the areas of launch vehicle systems engineering, structural design, structural dynamics, and pyrotechnics.

He has headed the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) since January 22, 2018. He will succeed K Sivan as the next director of one of the world’s leading space agencies.
