‘Movies such as ‘Jaws’ perpetuate the perception of certain species, particularly those with sharp teeth, as threats to humans. A 2015 Ipsos survey revealed that sharks absolutely terrify roughly half of Americans.

This is the small creature that causes the death of 725,000 people around the planet every year

However, the Florida Museum of Natural History’s data shows that only 11 shark-related deaths occurred globally in 2021. The Australian Institute of Marine Science states that a falling coconut is more likely to kill an individual than a shark attack.

So, which species poses the deadliest threat to humans? Surprisingly, the answer is the mosquito, a much smaller, seemingly insignificant creature. Mosquitoes can transmit lethal diseases such as malaria and dengue. The World Health Organization estimates that mosquitoes cause approximately 725,000 deaths every year, according to a report by USA Today.

Mosquitoes are vectors for numerous hazardous diseases, including chikungunya, dengue, lymphatic filariasis, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, Zika, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile fever, according to the WHO. We also know that other insects, such as fleas, lice, and ticks, transmit similar diseases.

What animal kills the most humans?

Mosquitoes cause more frequent deaths in some regions than others. For instance, approximately 96% of malaria deaths occur in African countries, as per the WHO’s reports. While these diseases mainly affect tropical regions, climate change and global warming are slowly pushing them towards southern Europe.

Diseases transmitted by these insects will likely become increasingly common in Spain since the Peninsula is transitioning into a more favourable habitat for these mosquitoes.

Top deadly animals

However, other animals stand out when it comes to causing fatalities in humans. According to the ranking published by Discover Wildlife, these would be the main ones:

Animal/Organism Deaths per Year
Freshwater Snails 200,000
Saw-scaled Viper 138,000
Various Insects 10,000
Scorpions 2,600
Ascaris Intestinal Worms 2,500
Saltwater Crocodiles 1,000
Elephants 500
Hippos 500

What animal has strongest bite force?

Animals are not required to kill to demonstrate danger. A lab at Florida State University discovered that Australian saltwater crocodiles possess the strongest bite, having a bite force value of 3,700 pounds.

ScienceDaily reports that this is the highest bite force ever recorded. However, they estimate that the largest extinct crocodilians, almost 40 feet in length, registered around 23,100 pounds of bite force.
