Nihar Malaviya, a publishing executive of Indian origin, has been appointed interim CEO of New York-based international publishing group Penguin Random House after its current CEO, Markus Dohle, announced he was stepping down. He had resigned “at his own request and on mutually best terms,” he added.

Nihar Malaviya, who is president and chief operating officer of Penguin Random House U.S., will take over as interim chief executive officer effective January 1, the company said.

As interim CEO of Penguin Random House, Malaviya “will lead the creation of new competitive advantages that position the global company for future growth,” the statement said.

Who is Nihar Malaviya

Nihar Malaviya has been appointed interim CEO of the world’s largest publisher, Penguin Random House after Markus Dohle stepped down. The Indian-born executive is the president and COO of Penguin Random House US. Malaviya joined Penguin’s German owner Bertelsmann in 2001 and moved within the group to Random House after two years.

Malaviya is a two-time recipient of the Bertelsmann Entrepreneur Award for Strategy Execution and is a member of the Bertelsmann Data and Technology Advisory Board. Education: She has an MBA in Finance and Marketing from NYU’s Stern School of Business, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

Since 2014, Malaviya has had responsibility for all US publishing operations, from supply chain to technology and data to customer services. She is a member of Penguin Random House’s Global Executive Committee and leads the creation of new competitive advantages that position the global company for future growth.

Malaviya began her career at Bertelsmann in 2001 as a participant in the Bertelsmann Entrepreneur Program.

In 2003, he moved within the group to Random House, successfully assuming various leadership positions. Malaviya is a two-time recipient of the Bertelsmann Entrepreneur Award for Strategy Execution and is a member of the Bertelsmann Data and Technology Advisory Board. She has an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the NYU Stern School of Business, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Malaviya is also a member of the board of Yale University Press.
