Farmers’ organizations announced Bharat Bandh on December 8, saying that if their demands were not met, then on that day they would surround all toll plazas in Delhi.
In a press conference, Gurnam Singh Chadhuni, leader of the Indian Kisan Union, said that if the Center did not accept the demands of the farmers in Saturday’s talks, they would intensify the protests.
Another farmer leader Harvinder Singh Lakhwal said, “In our meeting today, we have called for a Bharat Bandh on December 8, during which we will surround all the toll plazas in Delhi.”
“If the new agricultural laws are not withdrawn, we will close all the routes leading to Delhi in the coming days.”
For the last 9 days, farmers of Haryana, Punjab and other states have been protesting at the border areas of Delhi.
There will be a fifth round meeting between the farmers and the central government today, amidst protests by the farmers regarding the agricultural laws.
Earlier on Thursday, the fourth round of negotiations between the farmers and the government at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi ended.
In the meetings held so far, no agreement has been reached between the government and the farmers. In the fourth round of talks on Thursday, a delegation of 40 farmers had advised the government to withdraw the three agricultural laws by holding a special session of Parliament.
Here a large number of farmers are present at many places along the border connecting Delhi with other states.
Farmers are demanding withdrawal of new agricultural laws. They say that the new agricultural laws are anti-farmers and they will end the government’s minimum support price on crops, due to which they will have to rely on big companies.
At the same time, the government says that with the new laws, farmers will get better opportunities and new technology for agriculture.
After the fourth round of talks, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said that there is no arrogance in the government and she was considering the issues of farmers with an open mind. He had said that the government will discuss the points raised in the meeting and it is expected that in the next meeting, the talks will reach some conclusion.
