Why Is Your Term Premium Higher Than The Quote You Were Shown?

Ananya ran a term insurance premium calculator on a Tuesday night, got a number of ₹11,200 a year for ₹1 crore of cover, and felt good enough about it to book a medical test the same week. Three weeks later, the insurer’s offer letter showed ₹16,800. Same age, same cover, same 30 year term. She called the sales desk convinced someone had made a mistake.

Nobody had. This happens to a large number of buyers, and almost none of them understand why until someone actually walks them through it. Here is what changes between the quote screen and the final premium, and what you should actually do about it.

What Happens Between Your Online Quote And Your Final Premium?

A calculator quote is built on the information you type in, not on what a medical test and an underwriter later confirm. It assumes you answered every field correctly, that your medical reports come back clean, and that nothing about your job, your habits or your family history pushes you outside the standard risk category the calculator priced you at.

The final premium is set only after your actual medical results, your verified income, your occupation details and your habit declarations go through underwriting. If any of those come back different from what the calculator assumed, the price moves. It is not a bait and switch. It is the difference between an estimate and an underwritten offer.

Why Do Term Insurance Plans Even Show A Quote Before Checking Any Of This?

Because checking all of it upfront for every visitor to a website is not practical. Term insurance plans are priced using rate tables built around standard health, and the calculator applies that standard rate to whatever you self declare. It is a starting point, not a contract. The real pricing conversation only starts once you submit a formal application and go for tests.

What Actually Pushes The Number Up After You Apply?

A handful of things account for almost every premium jump.

Tobacco or nicotine use is the single biggest one. If you selected non tobacco on the calculator but your urine cotinine test comes back positive, or you admit to occasional smoking during the medical interview, your premium gets recalculated at tobacco user rates, which commonly run 40 to 70 percent higher than non tobacco rates for the same cover.

Body mass index and blood work are next. A BMI outside the insurer’s preferred band, or blood sugar, cholesterol or liver values that fall outside normal range, typically bring what underwriters call a rating, an extra loading on top of the standard premium, often somewhere between 10 and 50 percent depending on how far off normal the numbers are.

Occupation matters too. If you work offshore, fly aircraft, work in mining, or hold any job the insurer classifies as hazardous, and this was not accurately captured at the calculator stage, the revised premium can carry a meaningful occupational loading.

Family history plays a smaller but real role. A parent or sibling with an early heart condition or certain cancers before a certain age can add a modest loading even if your own tests are clean.

And sometimes it is simpler than all of that. Riders added after the initial quote, a change in policy term, or paying monthly instead of annually all change the number too, and none of that is medical underwriting at all.

How Big Can The Jump Actually Be?

Take Ananya’s case. Her ₹11,200 quote assumed non tobacco status and a BMI within the preferred band. Her test showed occasional tobacco use she had not flagged and a BMI slightly above the preferred cutoff. The tobacco correction alone typically adds 40 to 70 percent, and the BMI rating added a further loading on top of that. Stacked together, her ₹11,200 estimate becoming a ₹16,800 offer, roughly a 50 percent jump, is well within the normal range insurers see for this exact combination. These figures are industry wide underwriting patterns, not a quote for any specific plan, since the exact loading always depends on the insurer’s own medical board and rate tables.

What Should You Actually Check Before Accepting Or Pushing Back?

Reason for the higher premiumCan you negotiate it?What to actually do
Undeclared tobacco or habit useNoAccept if genuine, since misdeclaring further only risks claim rejection later
BMI or lab values out of rangeSometimesAsk if a repeat test after weight or sugar control could lower the rating
Occupation loadingRarelyCompare with another insurer’s occupation rate table before accepting
Family history loadingSometimesProvide additional medical evidence if your own health is genuinely clean
Rider or term changes you madeYesRemove the rider or revert the term if it was not essential

Who Should Simply Accept The Revised Premium?

If the loading is because of a real, verified health finding, tobacco use, elevated sugar, a genuine occupational risk, accept it. Trying to shop this exact profile to five other insurers usually gets you a similar or worse number once they run their own tests, and you lose weeks of being uninsured while you shop.

Who Should Not Accept It Without Asking Questions First?

If you have no tobacco use, no adverse lab values and no hazardous job, and the increase still shows up, ask for the underwriting reason in writing before paying anything. Insurers, including HDFC Life, are expected to disclose the specific reason for a loading if you ask. If the answer is vague or the insurer cannot point to a specific test result, that is worth escalating or comparing against a fresh quote elsewhere.

You should also push back if the loading is purely because of a family history event that happened to a distant relative, or a lab value that was borderline and could reasonably be retested.

How Should You Actually Use A Premium Calculator So This Stops Surprising You?

Run the calculator with your honest habits, your actual BMI, and your real occupation, not the version of yourself from five years ago. Add any rider you seriously intend to keep, and check the number at your intended policy term, not a shorter one you might later extend. A calculator quote built on accurate inputs will rarely move by more than a small underwriting margin once your tests come back, which is a very different experience from what Ananya went through.

If your revised premium still feels off after checking all of this, ask the insurer for the underwriting breakup in writing, compare it against one other insurer’s quote for the identical profile, and only then decide whether to proceed or apply elsewhere.
