Vaishali district has shut all schools up to Class 8 until May 31 as a heatwave tightens its grip on Bihar, with temperatures across the state climbing above 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.
District Magistrate Varsha Singh issued the order on Sunday, citing serious health and safety risks to children.
“Children must not be assembled on school premises during the restricted period under any circumstances,” Singh directed in the order.
What the Order Covers
The suspension covers all academic and non-academic activities in government and private schools up to Class 8, along with pre-schools and Anganwadi Centres.
Singh directed all school administrations to ensure strict compliance. Postponed activities will be rescheduled for a later period.
The administration has notified the Education, Police, and Health Departments, as well as Block Development Officers, to oversee implementation.
Where the Heat Is Worst
Temperatures in most Bihar districts are holding above 40 degrees Celsius. Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Rohtas, Arwal, and Jehanabad are recording the highest readings, crossing 42 degrees.
Patna is also above 40 degrees, compounded by high humidity that makes conditions feel significantly worse.
Health experts have advised parents to keep children indoors during peak afternoon hours to reduce the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.
Children should drink water, ORS, and lemon water regularly and eat light meals. Any child showing symptoms of dehydration or heatstroke should be taken to the nearest health centre immediately.
The administration is monitoring the health situation closely and has said further directions will follow as conditions develop.
