Winter has returned with full force across Madhya Pradesh, bringing biting cold weather that will persist for the next two days before temperatures begin to climb. The state Meteorological Department has confirmed that night temperatures will remain below 10 degrees Celsius in several regions, with the cold hitting hardest in the Gwalior-Chambal, Rewa, and Shahdol divisions.
Katni and Shahdol Record Lowest Temperatures
The coldest spots in the state are currently Karaundi in Katni district and Kalyanpur in Shahdol district. Karaundi recorded a bone-chilling 5.6 degrees Celsius, while Kalyanpur saw the mercury dip to 6.1 degrees Celsius on the night of February 7 and 8. These areas have become the epicentre of the cold wave sweeping through Madhya Pradesh.
Major cities have not been spared either. The state capital Bhopal recorded a minimum temperature of 10.4 degrees Celsius, while the commercial hub Indore saw temperatures drop to 10.6 degrees Celsius. Gwalior registered 11.2 degrees, Ujjain 12 degrees, and Jabalpur 11.9 degrees Celsius. In total, 13 cities across the state experienced night temperatures below 10 degrees.
Rural and hilly regions are bearing the brunt of this cold spell. Pachmarhi, Umaria, and Khajuraho all recorded 8.4 degrees Celsius. Rajgarh saw 8.5 degrees, while Shivpuri registered 9 degrees. Rewa and Malajkhand both recorded 9.1 degrees, with Naugaon at 9.5 degrees, Mandla at 9.6 degrees, and Datia at 9.8 degrees Celsius.
Light Fog in Gwalior-Chambal Region
On Sunday morning, light fog blanketed parts of the Gwalior-Chambal region. However, the weather department has ruled out the possibility of rain or dense fog in the immediate future. Residents can expect bright sunshine during the day, but cold winds will continue to blow through Bhopal, Sehore, Guna, Gwalior, Bhind, and Morena. The cold will feel most intense during late night and early morning hours.
The forecast for the coming days shows continued cold conditions. On February 10, light fog is expected with no rain alert, though the cold will intensify. By February 11, light to moderate fog will cover many districts, but again no rain is anticipated.
Western Disturbance to Bring Relief
Relief is on the horizon as a new western disturbance becomes active in the western Himalayan region starting February 9. Weather scientists say its impact will reach Madhya Pradesh around February 12, potentially bringing frost. However, the department has confirmed there is no likelihood of rain or hailstorm for the next five days.
After 48 hours of severe cold, temperatures will gradually begin rising, bringing mild warmth during daytime hours. Until then, residents are advised to take precautions against the cold, especially during early morning and late night hours when the chill is most penetrating.
