A severe cold weather continues to grip Madhya Pradesh, with 25 cities recording minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. The northern regions of the state are bearing the brunt of the cold spell, with dense fog severely affecting visibility and disrupting daily life.
Khajuraho Records Coldest Temperature
Khajuraho in Chhatarpur district emerged as the coldest location for the second consecutive night. The temperature plummeted to 3.6 degrees Celsius, recorded at 8:30 AM on Saturday morning. Meteorological officials predict the cold conditions will persist in Khajuraho until January 15, despite a gradual temperature increase over the past two days.
The dense fog has caused significant disruptions to rail operations across the state. More than a dozen trains traveling from Delhi to major cities including Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain are running behind schedule. The Malwa Express has been the worst affected, arriving three and a half hours late. The train, scheduled to reach Bhopal at 7:25 AM, is now expected around noon. Other major services including Punjab Mail, Janshtabdi, Sachkhand, and Jhelum Express are also experiencing delays.
Dense Fog Blankets Morena District
Morena district reported the season’s densest fog on Saturday morning, with visibility reduced to merely 15 meters. In the Ambah area of Morena, visibility dropped to just 20 meters, forcing children attending morning coaching classes to brave both the fog and biting cold. The meteorological department confirmed that temperatures in Morena have fallen below 6 degrees Celsius.
The cold wave is attributed to icy winds sweeping down from the snow-covered northern regions. These winds have intensified the cold effect across the upper parts of Madhya Pradesh, particularly impacting the Gwalior-Chambal region. Nine districts experienced cold day-like conditions on Friday, including Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, and Satna. Similar conditions are expected to continue on Saturday.
Dense fog has been reported in more than 15 districts across the state. The meteorological department has issued cold day alerts specifically for Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, and Chhatarpur districts. Farmers are particularly concerned as the continuous dense fog threatens to damage mustard, gram, and potato crops.
Major Cities Experience Severe Cold
Among the major cities, Gwalior recorded the lowest temperature at 5.9 degrees Celsius. Bhopal registered 7.2 degrees, while Indore saw temperatures drop to 6.9 degrees. Ujjain recorded 9 degrees and Jabalpur 9.4 degrees Celsius. Other cities experiencing severe cold include Shivpuri and Rajgarh at 4 degrees each, Datia at 4.6 degrees, and Naugaon and Rewa at 5 degrees. Mandla recorded 6 degrees, Pachmarhi 6.4 degrees, and Umria 6.9 degrees Celsius.
In Dhar, the mercury continued its downward slide. The city’s minimum temperature dropped from 11.6 degrees Celsius on Friday to 10.5 degrees on Saturday, increasing the chill during morning and night hours. The meteorological department has indicated that cold conditions may persist in the coming days.
Tikamgarh witnessed clear weather with sunshine on Saturday morning, though cold winds continue to blow across the region. The district recorded a daytime temperature of 20.8 degrees and a nighttime low of 8 degrees on Friday. Meanwhile, Chhindwara maintains temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, with the minimum recorded at 9.6 degrees and the maximum reaching 26 degrees.
Residents across Madhya Pradesh are advised to take necessary precautions against the cold wave and limited visibility conditions while traveling.
