Indore Zoo: India's first zero-waste facility with in-house waste management

REPORTED BY:

Indore Zoo is set to become India’s first zoo where waste management will be conducted entirely within the zoo premises. This significant initiative in Smart City Indore could serve as a model for other zoos across the country.

On Monday, Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma and other officials visited the zoo. During the visit, Commissioner Verma provided necessary guidelines to the officials. He explained that the zoo plans to create various waste management groups. These groups will establish pits within the facility to process food waste, gardening products, and dry waste.

Additionally, the NADEP pit technique will be used to convert green waste into compost, which will be utilized for gardening within the zoo. Special efforts are being made to systematically handle all waste generated in the zoo.

The waste will be segregated at seven different locations before being sent for recycling. This initiative is being supported by Godrej Products Limited under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The company will provide both financial and technical assistance to ensure successful implementation of the project.

Furthermore, FIRM Foundation will provide hands-on support at the zoo. This includes training and supervision for waste collection and treatment processes. The training will familiarize zoo staff with the latest waste management technologies and enable them to implement these techniques effectively.

Commissioner Verma has instructed officials to complete this work on schedule. He stated that this step will not only make the zoo clean and sustainable but also provide visitors with an opportunity to directly observe the waste processing procedures. This will increase awareness about cleanliness and help people understand how waste can be properly managed.

Upon successful implementation of this initiative, the “Zero Waste Zoo” will also receive ISO certification. This certification will recognize the zoo’s commitment to cleanliness and environmental conservation. Indore Zoo will be the first in India to receive such certification, marking a significant achievement.

The city of Indore already holds a leading position in the country regarding cleanliness, and this new initiative is expected to further strengthen this reputation.
