Communal tension erupted on Sunday evening in Kolkata, West Bengal, as two communities clashed resulting in the ransacking of Ekbalpur police station in the Mominpur district of the city.
Reports said clashes erupted when celebrations for Eid Milad-un-Nabi, which marks the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, took place late on Saturday. However, it erupted on Sunday during the Lakshmi Puja celebration.
Several people were injured, vehicles were damaged, houses were ransacked and shops were set on fire. A mob also ransacked the Ekbalpore police station on Sunday. The police had to fire tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
“At least 38 people have been arrested. The raids continue and large contingents of police, including RAF personnel, have been deployed to bring the situation under control. Article 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in the region. Some people, including two senior police officers, were injured in the clash,” a senior police officer said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor La Ganesan about the violence in Mominpur and the ransacking of the police station. of Ekbalpur on Sunday and called for “urgent deployment of central forces to contain the law and order situation” in the state.
“I have written to Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji & Hon’ble Governor Shri La Ganesan Ji requesting them to urgently deploy Central Forces in the wake of Mominpur violence & ransacking of Ekbalpur Police Station before the Law & Order situation of WB gets out of hand,” the BJP leader tweeted.
“I urge you to please intervene at this hour and deploy central forces so that the spark can be extinguished before it escalates into a wildfire. The state government appears unable to control the law and order,” Adhikari wrote in his letter.
Adhikari also led a delegation to the Raj Bhavan to meet the governor. BJP state chairman Sukanta Majumdar was arrested on his way to the unrest-torn region. Later, BJP state leaders took to the streets in protest and blocked roads in central Kolkata.
