Ground Report | New Delhi: In Tripura, three people were lynched by a mob on charges of cattle theft. Police saying that the incident happened on Sunday. When a mob lynched three people carrying cattle in a mini truck in North Maharanipur in Khowai district of Tripura.

The Indian Express, quoting Khowai SP Kiran Kumar, writes that the three people killed are 28-year-old Zayed Hussain, 30-year-old Bilal Mian, and 18-year-old Saiful Islam, who were residents of the Sonamura area of ​​Sepahijala. According to the police, the villagers of Namanjoypada saw the trio running along with five animals in a truck on Sunday morning after which they chased them and stopped them near North Maharanipur village.

The villagers started assaulting three people on the truck and during that time two people were beaten to death. While out of these, Saiful managed to escape.

The mob also captured Saiful and thrashed him to death near Mangiakami, another settlement near North Maharanipur. Senior district police officer Sonachran Jamatia said, “Acting immediately after getting information about the case, the police took the three to the GBP Hospital in Agartala where doctors declared them brought dead.”

“We have taken the mini-truck and the five cows in it,” a local police employee told The Hindu newspaper on condition of anonymity. He said that some animals were stolen from near Namanjoypada near North Maharanipur.

CPI(M) has issued a statement saying that this incident shows what is the law and order situation in the state. He has alleged that ever since the BJP-led coalition government was formed in the state, such incidents have increased in the state. Two separate cases of animal smuggling and mob lynching have also been registered at Champahower and Kayanpur police stations but no one has been arrested so far.

In February, a truck driver was lynched by unidentified men in Lalcheri village of Dhalai district. In December 2020, a 21-year-old youth was lynched on suspicion of theft in Agartala. At the same time, in the year 2018, Tripura was in the news for being lynched due to rumours of child theft.
