People of many religions live in India. According to the 2011 census, India’s population was 121 crores. The highest among them are 79.80 percent Hindus but there are many states where the number of Hindus is less than the population of other religions. 

Jammu and Kashmir 

Jammu and Kashmir has the highest percentage of Muslims at 68 percent. Hindus number 28 percent. Hindus are the majority in Jammu region while Kashmir has a Muslim majority. Jammu Kashmir has now been made a union territory.

Meghalaya

In the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, which is considered to be the home of the Meghas, 75 percent of Christians are believers. Here in second place are Hindus whose population is 12 percent. 

Mizoram 

Christians comprise 87 percent of the population in Mizoram. All the districts of Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai, Longtalai, Mamit, Kolasib, Serchip and Saha have Christian majority.

Arunachal Pradesh 

Arunachal Pradesh has the highest 30 percent population of Christians. In the second place, 29 percent are Hindus. The number of Buddhists here is about 12 percent. 

Punjab 

Punjab has the highest number of 58 percent believing in Sikhism. There are about 38 percent Hindus here. The famous Sikh Gurdwara Golden Temple is in Amritsar of the state.

Nagaland

Christians are the majority in the northeastern state of India, Nagaland. Their population is about 88 percent. Hindus are only 9 percent here. Christians are majority in all 11 districts including the capital Kohima.

Lakshadweep 

In the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, Muslims constitute the maximum 96 percent population. Hindus make up about 3 percent of the population. Source- (https://www.census2011.co.in). According to the 2011 census, India’s population was 121 crores. The highest among them are 79.80 percent Hindus but there are many states where the number of Hindus is less than the population of other religions.
