India’s Gas Crisis: How to Book Your LPG Cylinder With One Call or WhatsApp

Commercial LPG Cylinder
Gas cylinders stacked one above another at a storage site.

Despite the shortage, all three public sector oil companies continue to offer multiple ways to book your LPG cylinder. You can book directly through WhatsApp by messaging the official number, give a missed call, or use the company app, all from your phone in under a minute. The table below lists every official contact for Indane, HP Gas, and Bharat Gas so you can reach them or place a booking right away. Make sure you message from your registered mobile number, as bookings will not go through otherwise.

What triggered the crisis

The ongoing US-Israel war against Iran has led to the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global energy supply. Over 91% of India’s LPG imports in 2025 originated from this region, and weekly imports are estimated to have fallen by nearly 30%.

Domestic LPG cylinders became costlier by ₹60 from March 7, 2026, while commercial cylinders jumped by ₹115 across India. Panic bookings surged in several cities, prompting refill restrictions to curb hoarding.

The government invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to regulate distribution and prevent market malpractice. A mandatory 25-day inter-booking period replaced the earlier 21-day rule to stop consumers from booking refills too early.

Restaurants bear the brunt

Sagar Daryani, president of the National Restaurant Association of India, told CNBC the situation would lead to “closure of business and job losses.” He said 90% of restaurants in India rely on LPG cylinders to run their kitchens.

The Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association stated that at least 20% of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai had to shut down temporarily. Similar disruptions were reported in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.

The government directed refiners and petrochemical complexes to maximise LPG production and divert hydrocarbon streams into LPG output. The priority has been to protect domestic cooking gas supply, leaving commercial users facing the greatest shortages. Union Minister Suresh Gopi said India is working to stabilise supply and secure additional imports, with priority given to essential services.
