Madhya Pradesh is set to face four consecutive days of thunderstorms and rain, with a new weather system bringing fresh disruption from February 23 onward, particularly hitting the state’s south-eastern districts hardest.
Cyclonic circulation and an active trough line drove rain across more than 20 districts on Friday alone. Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Ujjain, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Raisen, and Dhar were among the areas that received rainfall within a 24-hour window. Saturday brought overcast skies, and forecasters expect conditions to deteriorate again by Sunday.
Farmers Count the Cost
The rains have caused significant damage to standing wheat crops in Ratlam, Shajapur, and Ujjain. Grain quality is expected to suffer, deepening the crisis for farmers who have already absorbed two bouts of rain and thunderstorms earlier this month. Crop damage is now anticipated across 25 districts over three days.
The state government has launched a survey in response. Revenue officials are visiting fields directly to assess losses and document the extent of destruction, a process that will determine what relief, if any, farmers can expect.
In Indore, the day temperature dropped sharply by four degrees to 24 degrees Celsius on Friday, while the night temperature fell to 15 degrees Celsius. Light rain hit parts of the city late at night. Saturday morning felt cold despite sunshine returning later in the day.
Jabalpur experienced a similar shift. A drizzle that began around 6 a.m. on Saturday made the air noticeably cooler. The weather department has forecast a minimum temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius for the city.
A western disturbance is expected to influence the western Himalayan region on February 22, with its effects spilling into Madhya Pradesh the following day. Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Seoni, Mandla, and Balaghat are likely to see rain on February 23. By February 24, the system is forecast to shift toward Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindouri, Mandla, and Balaghat.
This marks the fourth weather disturbance to hit the state in February alone, an unusually punishing stretch for the farming community at a critical point in the harvest season.
