Madhya Pradesh is set to face another strong cold weather spell after recent Mavtha rain and dense fog. The India Meteorological Department in Bhopal says minimum temperatures will drop by 2 to 3 degrees from January 25. Northern districts may receive rain on January 24. Fog will continue in several parts of the state.
Two cyclonic circulations over west-north India and Uttar Pradesh, along with a western disturbance, are driving this change. These systems are moving east and south and will affect Madhya Pradesh over the next two days.
Rain alert for northern districts
The weather department has issued a rain alert for seven districts on January 23. These districts are Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh and Chhatarpur.
Cloud cover will increase on January 24. Light rain may continue in parts of the northern belt. As these systems move forward, cold winds from the north will enter the state. This will push night temperatures down first, followed by cooler days.
Moderate fog covered Gwalior, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh and Chhatarpur on Thursday morning. Light fog was reported from Bhopal, Indore and Ujjain.
Low visibility slowed early morning traffic in several towns. Commuters should expect delays during the next few mornings.
Mandsaur remains the coldest district
Mandsaur recorded the lowest temperature in the state this week. The minimum temperature dropped to 5.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday-Wednesday night.
Rajgarh followed with 6.2 degrees. Naugaon recorded 7 degrees. Shajapur saw 7.1 degrees. Katni’s Karoundi recorded 7.6 degrees. Datia reported 7.9 degrees. Khajuraho logged 8 degrees. Rewa recorded 8.2 degrees. Shivpuri stood at 9 degrees. Pachmarhi recorded 9.2 degrees.
Among major cities, Gwalior was the coldest at 9 degrees. Bhopal recorded 10.8 degrees. Indore stood at 12.2 degrees. Ujjain logged 12 degrees. Jabalpur recorded 12.5 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to fall further from January 25.
A western disturbance is a weather system that brings winds and clouds from the west. It causes snowfall in the hills and rain in the plains. After it passes, cold air from the north flows into central India. This keeps both nights and days colder.
January often sees Mavtha when these systems turn active. Weather data from the last decade shows the same pattern. This year began with cloudy skies. Now rain and cold are set to follow.
