Cold weather conditions are tightening their grip across Madhya Pradesh as temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state. Pachmarhi is the coldest location, recording 6.6 degrees Celsius. The chill in the hill station has stayed firm both during day and night, as dense forests keep the air cool and dry.

Meteorologists say two Western Disturbances are active over the Himalayan belt. One system is already in place and another is trailing it. The two weather systems will increase snowfall and rainfall in the mountains. After that, cold winds from the north will sweep across the plains of Madhya Pradesh.

Cold Weather Tightens Grip

The weather office has forecast snow and rain in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 5 and 7. Once the systems pass, the winds will turn from the north. This shift will pull down temperatures in Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal and Sagar divisions around December 7 and 8. The drop will later reach Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Narmadapuram divisions as well.

Officials from the Meteorological Department state that winter this year is stronger than usual. Bhopal broke its November record from 84 years ago. Indore saw its lowest temperature in 25 years. Forecasts point toward a similar pattern in December, with no major relief in sight.

Among the main cities, Gwalior slid to 8.6 degrees Celsius. Indore stood at 10.2 degrees, Jabalpur at 11.4 degrees, Bhopal at 11.6 degrees and Ujjain posted 13 degrees. Many smaller towns reported sharp dips too. Kalyanpur in Shahdol district was at 7.4 degrees and Shajapur at 7.9 degrees. In the northern belt, Morena recorded 8.5 degrees. Datia hovered near 9.3 degrees, Rajgarh at 9.4 degrees and Rewa at 9.8 degrees.

The weather shift will get stronger after the snowfall in the Himalayan states. With new cold air descending into the plains, December is expected to remain harsh. The cold has also pushed fog into the morning and evening hours. Low visibility has slowed highway traffic and early office travel.

Early start of snow in Himalayas

Snowfall in the mountains will act as the main trigger for the next cold wave. Each time the Western Disturbance passes, it pushes colder winds deeper into the state. This pattern is likely to repeat several times through the month. Meteorologists say day temperatures might fall by four to six degrees on multiple occasions in Bhopal, Ujjain, Ratlam and Mandsaur. Cold days will follow if fog stays locked in until noon.

The early start of snow in Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir pushed cold winds into central India much sooner than usual. Retired weather expert D. P. Dubey said Pacific cooling has remained active this season, which strengthened the flow of cold winds toward central India. He said this pattern has been building since November.
