A sharp cold wave has spread across Madhya Pradesh. The state is reeling under a sudden drop in temperature due to cold winds coming from the north. On Monday, the Meteorological Department issued a cold wave alert for 20 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Jabalpur.

The mercury has dropped below 10°C in several cities. Rajgarh was the coldest, recording a minimum temperature of 7.6°C. Bhopal followed with 8.8°C, and Indore with 7.9°C. Gwalior touched 10.5°C, Ujjain 11°C, and Jabalpur 10.2°C.

According to weather officials, “The snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand has caused strong northerly winds to blow into Madhya Pradesh. This has pulled the temperatures down sharply.”

For three nights in a row, the mercury has stayed below 9°C in both Bhopal and Indore. The cold wave is particularly severe in Bhopal, Rajgarh, Sehore, Indore, and Shajapur. Rewa, Shahdol, and Jabalpur are also feeling the chill.

Record-breaking Nights

Bhopal recorded its coldest November night in 10 years, with a minimum temperature of 8°C. Indore’s 7°C reading marked its coldest November night in 25 years. The all-time record for Indore remains 5.6°C, registered in 1938. Rajgarh stayed the coldest city for the fourth night in a row.

Other cities such as Sehore (8.5°C), Umaria (9.5°C), and Rewa (9.9°C) also reported temperatures below 10°C. Pachmarhi was the only exception, remaining relatively warm at 15°C.

Weather experts say this early cold spell is unusual. “The cold has arrived early this year and may persist for the next few weeks,” a senior official at the IMD said.

The chill is not limited to nights. Daytime temperatures have also fallen below 30°C in many areas. Morning fog is expected to get denser over the next few days.

The IMD predicts the cold wave will continue in most northern and central districts for the next few days. The combination of low night temperatures and morning fog will make travel conditions challenging, especially on highways.

Farmers are being advised to protect their crops from frost, and residents are urged to avoid early morning exposure. The chill has arrived early, and this winter could be longer than usual for Madhya Pradesh.
