PSUs in Modi Government: Congress seems to dominate the government in the budget session of Parliament. After the sharp speech of Rahul Gandhi on the government, Congress leader Ripun Bora in the Rajya Sabha today also targeted the government. Ripun Bora questioned the government’s policy of privatization and compared it with the previous governments.

Ripun Bora attacked the central government and said that the Modi government did not set up a single public sector undertaking during its tenure and instead privatized 23 PSUs. Speaking on the Motion of Thanks for the President’s address, Ripun Bora also compared PM Modi to other Prime Ministers.

Bora said Rajiv Gandhi had created 16 PSUs and did not do any privatization. Atal Bihari Bajpayee had set up 17 PSUs and Manmohan Singh set up 23 PSUs. Only three were privatized under the Manmohan Singh government. But during the tenure of the Modi government, maximum privatization was done and not a single PSU was set up.

Questioning the President’s address, Bora said that 50 million people in the country have gone below the poverty line. Inflation is at its peak, but there is no mention in the address about how the public will be rescued from these problems.

Rahul Gandhi on Monopoly

On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi also accused the government of selling those Navratna companies of the country which were set up in the last 70 years with public money. Rahul said that the government is trying to privatize all the companies and establish a monopoly in the market.

Government’s Disinvestment Plan

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday unveiled an ambitious Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) that included unlocking value by involving private companies across infrastructure sectors – from passenger trains and railway stations to airports, roads and stadiums.

As many as 25 Airports Authority of India (AAI) airports, including ones at Chennai, Bhopal, Varanasi and Vadodara, as well as 40 railway stations, 15 railway stadiums and an unidentified number of railway colonies have been identified for getting private investments.
