India recorded its highest rainfall for May this year, with 116.6 mm of rain reported by May 30. This breaks the previous record of 110.7 mm set in 1990. The second highest record was in 2021, with 107.9 mm. Normally, the country receives 61.4 mm of rain in May.
Heavy rainfall has caused landslides in Sikkim’s Theng and Chungthang areas. Many houses buried under debris. Authorities have issued warnings for tourists and locals, advising them to avoid rivers, streams, and landslide-prone zones.
Himachal Pradesh faces an orange alert for heavy thunderstorms and rain. The alert covers four districts today and seven tomorrow. Officials have advised caution, especially for tourists, urging them to stay away from risky areas.
In Jammu and Kashmir, snowfall has caused traffic disruptions. The Gurez-Bandipura Road and Mughal Road remain closed. Ramban district experienced a hailstorm mixed with rain.
Rajasthan also sees rising storm activity. Seven districts are under storm alert today. Ajmer opened three gates of Anasagar Lake to release water after recent rains. Barmer recorded 30 mm of rain in 24 hours, marking its highest May rainfall in six years.
Several states reported damage from heavy rain. Roads in Guwahati, Assam, flooded after recent showers. In Karnataka’s Mangaluru, a house collapsed, killing a 16-year-old girl. Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram continues to experience heavy rain.
In Madhya Pradesh, authorities warned of storms and heavy rain in 21 districts, including Bhopal. A sewage system was installed around the pandal for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event to prevent waterlogging during the rain.
Bihar saw heavy rain in Raxaul. The Meteorological Department predicts heavy showers in 10 districts with strong winds and lightning.
