Preparations have started to restart the cochlear implant service at MY Hospital in Indore. The service had stopped for three years because tenders for implants were not issued.
Despite this, the ENT department continued screening and speech therapy for children during the break. Now, the MGM Medical College has approved the proposal to resume implant surgeries. ENT Department Head Dr. Yamini Gupta submitted the proposal to Dean Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria. The administration has approved it.
Local-level tenders for implant purchase will now be issued. A demand letter will also be sent to the Medical Corporation to speed up the process.
A cochlear implant is a medical device that helps children with hearing loss hear and speak. The cost per child under the National Child Health Program is ₹6.48 lakh. This includes ₹1.2 lakh for speech therapy.
So far, doctors have performed around 100 implants under the program. About 85% of children have shown good progress. Each year, 15 to 17 surgeries are typically performed. Reports say nearly 2% of children face hearing issues.
MY Hospital first received approval for cochlear implants in 2017–18. In the initial phase, doctors performed 12 to 15 surgeries. The service was later disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Doctors say that parental involvement after the surgery is key to successful recovery.
Other hospitals like Aurobindo, Choithram, Aakash, and Noble are already performing these surgeries under the same national program. With MY Hospital restarting the service, many more hearing-impaired children are expected to benefit.
