Madhya Pradesh is in the grip of a severe heatwave. The Meteorological Department has issued alerts for several districts as temperatures continue to rise rapidly, pushing daily life to a standstill in many parts of the state.
In Khajuraho, Panna, and Sidhi, the mercury is expected to reach 45°C today. On Tuesday, these districts had already recorded temperatures between 43°C and 44°C. The rising heat has forced people indoors, with roads and markets wearing a deserted look, especially in the afternoon hours.
The heatwave warning extends to Barwani, Alirajpur, Datia, Shivpuri, Bhind, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Satna, Gwalior, and Morena. These areas are likely to experience extreme heat conditions throughout the day. Other parts of the state are also seeing a steady rise in temperature, with no signs of relief in the near future.
In the last 24 hours, the state has recorded some of the highest temperatures this season. Khajuraho saw the highest at 44.4°C, followed by Sidhi, Mandla, and Naugaon at 43°C each. Bhopal registered 41.2°C, Indore 40.9°C, and both Gwalior and Ujjain touched 41.5°C. Jabalpur crossed 42°C, making it one of the hottest cities in the state.
In Ujjain, where the famous Baba Mahakal temple sees a large number of visitors, authorities have laid down matting along the paths to protect devotees’ feet from burning on the hot ground. The heat has disrupted daily routines, with people avoiding unnecessary travel and staying indoors during peak hours.
The Meteorological Department has said that the weather remains clear across the state, with no rain or cloud cover expected. This is contributing to the rising temperatures. Officials warn that the heatwave may persist for another five to six days. With clear skies and dry conditions, the temperature is expected to increase further.
The department has appealed to people to remain cautious. It has advised staying indoors during peak hours, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary.
As April draws to a close, Madhya Pradesh continues to face one of its hottest periods of the season. With no immediate change in weather patterns, residents may have to brace for more intense heat in the coming days.
