The Tiger Strike Force and Forest Department have arrested three poachers related to a tiger’s death in Banspani forest, Banapur Range. The accused, Kailash Korku, Pinta, and Ram Ratan, are from Banspani village.

During interrogation, the accused admitted they had set an electric snare to hunt wild boars. “We set the trap for wild boars, but a tiger got caught and died from electric shock,” one of the accused revealed.

The poachers claimed they found the tiger dead in the trap the next morning. They dragged the carcass into nearby bushes to hide it before returning to their village.

The tiger’s body was found on December 11 during a routine patrol. A four-day search operation, led by DFO Anil Chopra, resulted in the arrest of three poachers on December 15.

“The operation was carried out with utmost dedication. After questioning, the accused revealed the snare and tools’ location,” Chopra said. Electric wires and wooden pegs used to secure the snare were seized from the suspects.

Officials are investigating whether others are involved in the crime. The poachers denied removing the tiger’s nails, teeth, or tail hair, which are often sold illegally. However, the search for these missing body parts continues.

“This raises serious questions,” said Ashok Kumar Chauhan, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF). “We are investigating further to find out if the tiger’s parts have been trafficked.”

Chauhan confirmed three arrests in the case and assured further action. “We will not tolerate such crimes. Strict legal measures are being implemented to prevent poaching and protect wildlife,” he added.

The forest search operation is ongoing to uncover more evidence and identify other suspects involved in the incident.
