On October 25, 2024, the severe cyclonic storm “Dana” made landfall near Habalikhati Nature Camp in Odisha, impacting the region with strong winds and heavy rainfall. The storm’s wind speeds ranged from 100 to 110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph, leading to significant weather disturbances across the coastal areas.

Impact on Weather Conditions

The storm has resulted in isolated extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Odisha and parts of south Gangetic West Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported heavy to very heavy rainfall in various districts, including:

  • Odisha: Anugul, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Puri
  • West Bengal: East and West Medinipur

Residents in these areas are advised to remain indoors and take necessary precautions due to the risk of flooding and waterlogging.

Safety Measures and Advisories

In light of the severe weather conditions, the IMD has issued several safety advisories:

  • Evacuations: Coastal hutment dwellers are being moved to safer locations.
  • Travel Restrictions: Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on traffic advisories.
  • Agricultural Precautions: Farmers are urged to postpone harvesting and sowing activities until the weather stabilizes. Specific recommendations include:
    • Drain excess water from rice nurseries and fields.
    • Provide mechanical support to crops to prevent lodging.

As Cyclone Dana continues to affect the region, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety measures to ensure their well-being during this challenging weather event.
