General Motors is preparing to launch the fifth-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as a 2027 model year truck, with a full reveal expected during the 2026 calendar year. The redesign brings updated styling, a new interior, a sixth-generation Small Block V8, and for the first time, a plug-in hybrid powertrain option.
The overhaul also covers GM’s twin truck, the GMC Sierra 1500, which shares the same platform and will receive the same generational updates.
What Is New on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
The 2027 Silverado 1500 represents the most significant update to GM’s best-selling truck in years. It rides on an updated version of the existing T1 platform, internally called T1-2, which GM engineers have modified to improve ride quality, towing capability, and fuel efficiency.
The biggest powertrain news is the arrival of the sixth-generation Small Block V8, which GM says will deliver a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to current models. The engine will be produced at GM’s Flint Engine Plant in Michigan, which received a $579 million investment to support the new powerplant.
The turbocharged 2.7L four-cylinder TurboMax and the 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel six-cylinder are both expected to carry over from the current generation.
The interior will receive a full refresh with GM’s latest infotainment system. Spy photos captured by Car and Driver show three Silverado test mules on a car carrier, still wrapped in camouflage, but with enough detail visible to confirm the production design closely follows a General Motors patent filing submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office late last year.
“From what we can tell by our spy photos, the production versions will look an awful lot like the one in the patent images,” Car and Driver’s Glenn Paulina wrote.
The front end features a new grille bisected by a horizontal bar connecting high-mounted daytime running lights, with C-shaped lower headlight units below. At the rear, taillights extend deeper into the bedsides, and the tailgate shape mirrors the patent filing. Integrated side steps remain on the rear bumper. All three test mules observed in spy photography retain a solid rear axle meaning GM has not followed its full-size SUV lineup in adopting a multilink rear suspension.
Will the 2027 Silverado Have a Hybrid?
GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed the company is actively working to reintroduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid models to the North American market around the 2027 timeframe. A new plug-in hybrid variant of the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 is expected to be part of that push.
The specific configuration of the hybrid powertrain has not been confirmed. Three options are under consideration based on GM’s existing engine portfolio and competitive positioning.
A four-cylinder hybrid would prioritize fuel economy, pairing the existing 2.7L TurboMax with an electric motor for strong low-end torque and competitive efficiency numbers. A six-cylinder hybrid would target the middle ground balancing performance with towing and payload capability, and going head-to-head with Ford’s PowerBoost system, which pairs a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with an integrated electric motor to produce 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. A V8-based hybrid would put capability and output first, maintaining the driving characteristics traditional Silverado buyers expect while adding electric torque for faster acceleration.
GM previously stated in 2024 that it plans to reintroduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid offerings to its North American lineup around the 2027 timeframe, even as regulatory changes and softening electric vehicle demand continue to reshape the market.
When Does 2027 Silverado 1500 Go on Sale?
GM expects to reveal the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 at some point during the 2026 calendar year. Sales are expected to begin in late 2026 in the United States.
The 2027 Silverado Medium Duty โ covering the 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD variants โ is expected to reach dealerships in January 2027. The Silverado HD range, comprising the 2500 HD and 3500 HD, is expected to carry over largely unchanged for 2027, with a full redesign planned for the 2028 model year.
Where Is 2027 Silverado Built?
GM builds the Silverado 1500 across three plants: GM Fort Wayne Assembly in Fort Wayne, Indiana; GM Silao Assembly in Silao, Mexico; and GM Oshawa Plant in Oshawa, Canada. The Oshawa plant produces only Silverados โ not the GMC Sierra โ in both 1500 and HD configurations.
Silverado HD models are assembled exclusively at GM Flint Assembly in Flint, Michigan. The Silverado Medium Duty is built at the Navistar Springfield plant in Springfield, Ohio.
The 2027 Silverado 1500 will be available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, and Brazil. HD models will reach the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East.
How Does 2027 Silverado Compare to Competition?
The 2027 Silverado enters a market where Ford and Stellantis have moved aggressively on hybrid and turbocharged powertrains. Ford’s F-150 PowerBoost hybrid has set a high bar for electrified truck performance. Ram’s eTorque mild-hybrid system offers a lighter-touch alternative focused on fuel economy.
GM’s decision to offer a full plug-in hybrid rather than a mild hybrid, signals a more direct challenge to Ford’s position in the segment. The sixth-generation Small Block V8, combined with a new platform and updated interior, positions the 2027 Silverado as a comprehensive overhaul rather than an incremental refresh.
Full specifications, pricing, and powertrain details are expected when GM officially reveals the truck later in 2026.
