Ordering food online has become more expensive. Customers now pay higher platform charges, convenience fees, and even inflated menu prices. Many are questioning if delivery apps like Swiggy and Zomato are worth the extra cost.
One user recently shared a workaround that avoids delivery apps entirely. Her idea has gone viral and sparked a debate online.
Krisha, a recent graduate from Delhi Technological University, explained that she no longer uses food delivery apps. Instead, she calls her favorite restaurants directly. The restaurant packs the food, and she hires Uber or Rapido to pick it up.
Her math is simple. Even if she pays ₹50 to ₹100 for the pickup, the final bill is still cheaper than what apps charge after adding their fees and markups.
Her post on X drew thousands of reactions within hours. Many users agreed with her method and shared similar stories.
Why some users support it
Several people said restaurant prices are often lower when you order directly.
One user wrote, “Zomato and Swiggy have 40 to 50% markup. When your order is above ₹300, the real cost is almost half. Using Rapido or Porter is cheaper.”
Others added that direct orders sometimes come with larger portions or extra discounts, which delivery apps don’t provide. Families and regular customers found this especially useful.
Why others disagree
Not everyone was convinced. Some pointed out the hassle of coordinating with riders, sharing pickup details, and handling problems without app support.
“Smart move, but isn’t convenience part of what you’re paying for with apps?” asked one user.
Another said, “Zomato and Swiggy’s fees are annoying, but at least they handle the mess. Your method shifts it all to you.”
A few raised safety and accountability questions. Delivery apps monitor the entire process and take responsibility if something goes wrong. With third-party services, that chain of responsibility disappears.
“If the Rapido or Uber rider mishandles the food, who takes ownership?” one user asked.
What you can do to save
If you want to cut costs on food delivery, here are some options:
- Call restaurants directly and ask if they deliver on their own.
- Compare app prices with restaurant prices before ordering.
- Use local riders or pickup services for cheaper delivery on large orders.
- Check if restaurants offer discounts or loyalty deals outside the apps.
The debate shows that many people are willing to trade convenience for savings. But the real question is: would you give up app comfort to keep more money in your pocket?
