Winter like weather has arrived early in Madhya Pradesh this year. The cold, which usually grips the state in the second half of November, has set in a week sooner. Temperatures across major cities have dropped sharply, breaking records that stood for nearly a decade.
For the past two nights, the mercury has fallen below 10ยฐC in several districts. Rajgarh was the coldest, recording 9ยฐC on Thursday night. Indore followed with 10.3ยฐC, breaking its 10-year November record. Bhopal stood at 11ยฐC, Gwalior at 11.3ยฐC, Ujjain at 13ยฐC, and Jabalpur at 14.6ยฐC.
Record-Breaking Cold Weather in MP
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), โthe temperature drop is due to the setting of a north-easterly wind pattern, which is bringing cool air from the Himalayas to the plains.โ Experts say that this early chill is a sign of a harsher winter ahead.
The cold has already disrupted daily life. In Jhabua, where temperatures fell to 8.4ยฐC, the district administration changed school timings. Collector Neha Meena said, โClasses for nursery to class 3 will now start at 9 am, while other classes will begin at 8 am.โ
The chill is spreading across the state. Guna, Datia, and Dhar have seen temperatures fall to 12ยฐC. Rewa, Betul, and Umaria hover between 13ยฐC and 14ยฐC. Even the hill station Pachmarhi recorded higher temperatures than Bhopal and Indore this week, an unusual weather reversal for November.
Early cold due to dry winds
Meteorologists say this drop is linked to post-monsoon moisture loss and the inflow of dry, cold winds. As snow forms in the north and melts gradually, it cools the air masses that move toward central India. With this, Madhya Pradesh experiences an early and sharper dip in temperature.
The fog is also expected to thicken. IMD forecasts show that visibility could fall to 1โ2 km in several cities. Mandla has already reported low visibility levels. โFog will increase in the next few days, especially in early mornings,โ a weather official said.
Last month also saw a shift in weather patterns. Bhopal recorded its coldest October day in 25 years at 24ยฐC. October rainfall exceeded expectations, with 2.8 inches recordedโ121% above normal. Meteorologists believe this excessive moisture helped accelerate the cold wave once the monsoon withdrew.
For the next ten days, the chill is likely to deepen. Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur will continue to feel cold days and colder nights, with occasional fog and chances of light rain in the third and fourth weeks of November.
