A prolonged cold wave has gripped parts of Madhya Pradesh, with minimum temperatures falling below 10 °C in 13 cities, and the state meteorological department issuing alerts for two days. The capital Bhopal has endured seven consecutive days of cold, with lows around 8-10 °C. Cities such as Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior also recorded sub-10‐degree nights.
Meteorologist Divya E. Surendran noted that cold‐northerly winds are driving the drop in temperature. The winds channel down from the Himalayas after fresh snowfall and then sweep through the plains aided by an anticyclone over Rajasthan. In Shahdol the mercury hit 7.2 °C, in Shivpuri it hovered around 8 °C, and in Bhopal it dropped to 9.6 °C. Indore saw 8.2 °C, Jabalpur 9.4 °C, Gwalior 10.5 °C and Ujjain 11.8 °C.
The impact of the cold wave has been stark in Bhopal, where residents report seeing persistent chill through the week. The weather office has flagged a cold‐wave alert for eight consecutive days for the capital and many other districts. The alert covers Indore, Bhopal, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Dewas, Sehore, Shivpuri, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Maihar, Katni, Jabalpur, Umaria, Shahdol, Mandla, Dindori and Anuppur.
In contrast to the plains, the hill station Pachmarhi shows a different pattern: nights remain relatively warm, but daytime temperatures have dropped. On one night Pachmarhi recorded a low of 14.2 °C while the day high reached 23–24 °C. In other parts of the state, like Sidhi and Malajkhand, temperatures stayed in the 23–24 °C range by day.
Looking at the larger trend, November has shown a pattern of early and sharp fall in minimum temperatures across the state, consistent with the last ten years. In October the state recorded higher than normal rainfall (2.8 inches against a normal 1.3 inches) and a cooler‐than‐usual daytime high in many cities, including Bhopal where October 30 recorded 24 °C, the lowest in 25 years for that date.
Cold weather grips MP
Meteorological records show that in Gwalior 56 years ago the night temperature once dropped to 3 °C in November, and in Ujjain the minimum once went down to 2.3 °C 52 years ago.
The forecast offers some relief. From November 17 the minimum temperatures across the major cities are expected to rise slightly above 10 °C while daytime highs climb into the mid-20s °C. The cold wave alert is expected to ease as the winds from the north weaken and skies remain clear. For now, the cold persists—but the thaw appears on its way.
