The chill from the north has firmly set into Madhya Pradesh. Temperatures dropped sharply across the state this week, marking the start of the winter season.
Indore recorded its fifth coldest November night in ten years, with the mercury dipping to 12.1 degrees Celsius. The city had seen a similar chill in November last year when the temperature touched 11.6 degrees.

The cold winds also swept through Bhopal and Ujjain, pushing the minimum temperature below 15 degrees. In Bhopal, the night temperature was 13 degrees, while Ujjain recorded 14.5 degrees. Rajgarh was the coldest spot in the state, touching 11 degrees Celsius.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the temperature has dropped by up to 6 degrees in several regions since Wednesday. The effect of snowfall in northern states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand has reached the plains, including Madhya Pradesh.
Dr. Divya E. Surendran, senior weather scientist, said cold winds from the north will continue to affect the state. “There is no rain alert for the next five days. Northern winds are now active, and the temperature will keep falling, especially during the night,” she said.
The weather department said the minimum temperature across all major cities has now fallen below 20 degrees. Cities such as Guna, Dhar, and Naugaon recorded between 14 and 15 degrees.
The drop is not limited to nights. Daytime temperatures have also come down in most cities. Bhopal recorded 28.4 °C, Indore 28.3 °C, Ujjain 29.5 °C, and Gwalior 28.6 °C. Only a few areas, including Jabalpur and Narmadapuram, stayed slightly above 30 °C.

Meteorologist Arun Sharma said a cyclonic circulation near Haryana has strengthened cold winds across Madhya Pradesh. “This system will soon merge into the western disturbance active over North India. It will not bring rain to the state but will increase cold intensity,” he said.
The drop in temperature is noticeable in both urban and rural areas. In Rajgarh and Shajapur, residents have started using woollens in the evenings. In Indore and Bhopal, morning walkers reported a sharp nip in the air and patches of fog near open grounds.
Fog has already begun forming in parts of Mandla, Jabalpur, Rewa, and Satna. Visibility early in the morning ranged between one and four kilometres. The meteorological office warned that fog will increase further as temperatures drop through mid-November.

The recent weather change follows a wetter-than-usual October. Bhopal recorded 121 percent more rainfall than normal last month, keeping daytime temperatures low. On October 30, the city’s maximum temperature was just 24 °C, the coldest October day in 25 years.
Now, the early winter chill marks a steady shift toward colder conditions. Data from the past decade show that November often sees a sharp temperature fall in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in Gwalior-Chambal and Malwa regions.
