The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a heavy spell of rain and snow is expected over the western Himalayan region and the nearby plains of northwest India in the next few days.
A new active western disturbance will cause widespread rain and snow with thunderstorms in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh from Feb 18-20 and in Uttarakhand on Feb 19 and 20.
IMD predicts that Punjab will likely experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and hail with gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 gusting to 50 kmph) during 18-20; IMD also forecasts that Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh will experience similar weather conditions during Feb 19-21, and predicts that Rajasthan will experience these conditions on Feb 19.
Friday (February 16)
- Isolated rain/snow is possible over Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
- Dense fog is possible in isolated pockets of Northern, Central, and Eastern India in morning hours.
Saturday (February 17)
- Scattered rain/snow with thunderstorms is likely over Ladakh.
- Isolated rain/snow may occur over Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh.
- Isolated rain is possible over Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Assam.
- Dense fog may blanket isolated places of Northern, Central, and Eastern India in morning hours.
A new Western Disturbance will affect the Western Himalayan Region from this weekend to early next week. It will cause hailstorm and widespread light to moderate rain or snow with some heavy spells over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh from Feb 18-20, and over Uttarakhand on Feb 19.
The Western Disturbance will also bring scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, hail and gusty winds (speed up to 50 kmph) over Punjab from Feb 18-20; Haryana, Chandigarh and West Uttar Pradesh from Feb 19-21 and over Rajasthan on Feb 19-20.
Rains likely in parts of country
A cyclonic circulation over central Chhattisgarh and a trough from North interior Karnataka to this circulation in the lower levels of the atmosphere will affect the weather in the next five days.
This will cause light to moderate rain over Vidarbha, north Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Sikkim, and Jharkhand, due to the anticyclone over the north Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, the national capital will have a mainly clear sky today with moderate fog in the morning. The minimum and maximum temperatures will be around 9 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
On Thursday, Delhi’s maximum temperature was 26 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 8.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees lower than the normal.
The air quality of Delhi has improved slightly from ‘very poor’ to ‘poor’, with an AQI of 279, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
