The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made a vast array of its space datasets available to the public for free. This decision positions India at the forefront of space data accessibility, offering some of the world’s most progressive and high-resolution datasets.
A recent update to the nation’s space policy mandates that all datasets above 5-meter resolution must be made freely available. This unprecedented access surpasses the previously best free data provided by the USA at 15 meters and Europe at 10 meters resolution.
The 5-meter datasets originate from India’s own Resourcesat-2/2A satellites, renowned for their detailed imaging capabilities. Additionally, ISRO’s latest satellite, EOS-04, equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar, offers some of the highest resolution and quality datasets ever released.
The treasure trove of data includes a variety of datasets from the OCEANSAT series, IRS series dating back to 1988, Scatterometer datasets, and more. With the upcoming DUAL BAND NISAR coverage starting in 2024, India’s commitment to a civilian-focused space program is clear.
ISRO’s Earth Observation Data portal, Bhoonidhi (https://bhoonidhi.nrsc.gov.in), serves as the gateway to these valuable resources.
