‘Widespread intermittent light to moderate rain & snowfall over higher reaches from tomorrow’
As the summers are fading away for this season, the weather department has forecasted the first major weather activity of widespread intermittent light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir from October 14-18.
A meteorological department official on Friday in a released information to Ground Report said that today would be mainly clear but would become cloudy towards evening, saying that there will be the possibility of Rain/Snow over higher reaches towards night at scattered places of J&K.
“Widespread intermittent light with moderate rain or snowfall over higher reaches is very likely. There’s a possibility of heavy snowfall at some places over higher reaches (>75% chance). A significant drop in temperature across J&K is expected,” the official stated.
The weather officials have also issued an advisory asking farmers to postpone harvesting of crops from 14-18 Oct.
“Postpone harvesting of crops from 14-18th. May temporarily disrupt transportation, especially at vulnerable places like Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthan top, Sadnatop etc, adding they said to be aware and plan accordingly”.
He said widespread intermittent light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches was likely with over 75% chance from October 14-18.
Notably, this is considered to be the first major weather activity for this season, as the weatherman has forecasted a four-day wet spell with rains and snow in the region.
Pertinent to mention that the valley this year grappled with the hot weather conditions this summer with water volume in the water bodies going down by 75%.
The hot weather conditions this summer witnessed such a significant drop in the water level in the river Jhelum that it’s shores became visible with distressing pictures of houseboats on it’s dry shores.
Srinagar last month recorded the season’s second-highest day temperature during the last 132 years.
According to the MeT officials, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C, which was 6.0°C above normal. This was the 2nd highest maximum temperature ever recorded in September since 1891.
The MeT officials added that it had broken the 53-year-old record of 33.8°C recorded on 01 September 1970.
