Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday declared that India has demonstrated to the world how to combat climate change. In his address to the nation from the Red Fort on the 77th Independence Day, PM Modi exclaimed, “The whole world is struggling with climate change, and it is India that has shown the way to combat it.”
Prime Minister Modi and then French President Francois Hollande launched ISA at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in November 2015 with the aim to promote solar energy utilization and facilitate cooperation among solar-rich countries for mutual benefits.
CDRI is an international initiative aimed at promoting the resilience of infrastructure systems in the face of natural and human-made disasters.
India launched “Life Mission” which aims to stop mindless consumption of resources and formed important international coalitions such as International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and International Big Cat Alliance.
The International Big Cat Alliance aims to protect and conserve seven major big cats – tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, puma, jaguar, and cheetah — across the world.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation, she urged citizens to move ahead with harmony and brotherhood to fulfill the vision of India’s founding fathers. President Murmu emphasized the need to address climate change in the face of extreme weather events.
She stated, “Scientists and policymakers worldwide should prioritize climate change. We must take action at the local, national, and global levels for the environment’s sake.”
”One area that merits urgent attention of scientists and policymakers all over the world is climate change. We have faced numerous extreme-weather events in recent years. Parts of India have faced extraordinary floods. At the same time, there are places facing drought,” Murmu said.
”These events are also attributed to the phenomenon of global warming. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts at the local, national and global levels for the environment,” the President said.
