The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a press release regarding Cyclonic Storm “DANA,” which is currently located over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal. The storm is expected to move northwestward and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by early morning on October 24th.

Expected Impact

Wind Speeds and Rainfall:

  • The storm is forecasted to cross the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island, with wind speeds reaching 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph.
  • Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on October 24th and 25th.

Regional Weather Forecast:

  • Arunachal Pradesh: Isolated heavy rainfall is expected on October 23rd.
  • Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura: Heavy rainfall is anticipated on October 23rd and 24th.
  • Central, West & Northwest India: No significant rainfall is expected during the week.

Wind Warnings

The IMD has issued warnings for gale winds in various regions:

  • Eastcentral Bay of Bengal: Gale winds of 70-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, are expected from the evening of October 23rd until the morning of October 24th.
  • Westcentral Bay of Bengal: Winds will increase to 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, and further to 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph from the morning of October 24th.
  • Northwest Bay of Bengal: Squally winds will escalate to gale speeds of 70-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph from the evening of October 23rd.

Potential Hazards

The storm poses several risks, including:

  • Damage to trees and power lines.
  • Flooding of low-lying areas and roads.
  • Major damage to standing crops, particularly in vulnerable regions.
  • Disruption of marine and inland water transportation.

Safety Measures and Advisories

The IMD has recommended several safety measures:

  • Fishermen are advised to suspend fishing operations from October 23rd to 25th.
  • Coastal residents should be moved to safer locations.
  • People in affected areas are urged to remain indoors and avoid travel unless necessary.
  • Authorities are advised to regulate maritime and surface transport activities.
