Madhya Pradesh is once again facing sharp cold weather due to strong winds blowing from the northern hills. The drop is clear across Gwalior, Chambal, Sagar and many central districts. Thick clouds and dense early morning fog have made nights longer and colder.
Nineteen cities recorded less than 10°C on Thursday and Friday night. Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Indore also felt the drop. The fall is between 2°C and 3°C in most parts, according to the Meteorological Department.
Snowfall in Himachal and Uttarakhand has pushed icy winds toward central India. The forecast says the chill will grow on December 7 and 8.
Cold wave tightens across MP
Rewa felt the sharpest dip. Its mercury hit 5.8°C, lower than Pachmarhi. Gwalior stood at 7.5°C, Jabalpur at 9.9°C and Bhopal at 8.2°C. Indore remained slightly higher at 11°C. Rajgarh and Kalyanpur touched 6°C, Pachmarhi 6.7°C, and Chitrakoot 6.8°C. Cities like Damoh, Khajuraho and Sidhi also slipped close to 9°C.
Senior scientist Dr. Divya E. Surendran said, “Cold winds reached the state early due to early snowfall in the north. A shift in the wind pattern slowed the chill for a bit, but the effect remains strong.”
Day temperatures also slid. Pachmarhi and Narsinghpur recorded 23.2°C. Betul touched 23.7°C, while Shivpuri stayed at 24°C. Bhopal was warmer at 25°C. Gwalior recorded 25.6°C and Indore 24.8°C.
Records broke in many places over the past month. Bhopal saw its lowest November in 84 years. The mercury fell to 5.2°C on November 17. The earlier record was 6.1°C in 1941. In Indore, the drop to 6.4°C set a 25-year low.
Rewa once again stayed the coldest on Friday with 5.8°C. Bhopal showed slight relief at 11.6°C. Shahdol and Rajgarh reported 6°C. Pachmarhi in Narmadapuram and Datia recorded 6.4°C. Chitrakoot stood at 6.7°C, making outdoor movement harsh both morning and night.
Cold winds set longer freeze
The state is feeling two active weather systems. Western disturbance and cyclonic circulation are driving the cold. The IMD says temperatures may hold for a few days without severe warnings, but fog remains a concern.
A special forecast for Bhopal says the night temperature can slide to 8°C. Skies will stay clear but dense fog is likely at dawn.
Cold waves could stretch for 20 to 22 days in December and early January, especially across Gwalior, Chambal, Sehore, Vidisha, Niwari, Panna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Dhar and Jhabua. Winds sweeping from the Himalayas can drop both day and night readings in repeated cycles.
Retired weather chief DP Dubey said global models had signaled La Niña earlier. He said, “Sea cooling over the Pacific cooled the air and pushed the wind toward central India.” He added that early snowfall in the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand boosted the chill by nearly 30 percent across MP.
Western disturbances are frequent this time. Light rain drops temperatures further and keeps cold waves active. Bhopal, Ujjain and Ratlam could see a fall of up to 6°C in short spells. Indore, Dewas, Morena and other pockets may also face colder days.
Dense fog continues to return every morning. Visibility stays low on highways and city routes at dawn. Meteorologists have asked people to stay alert while driving in fog.
The cold continues across the plains and hill belts. December is expected to stay firm with cold winds pushing deeper into central parts.
