The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee has submitted a report to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) stating that the city produces about 220 MLD of sewage water, while its treatment capacity is 250.7 MLD. This indicates that Chandigarh’s sewage treatment capacity exceeds 100 percent.
The report reveals that currently, eight sewage treatment plants (STPs) are operational in the city. Five of these meet the latest environmental standards, while the remaining three have been upgraded.
Two of these upgraded STPs are in the testing or stabilization phase, and the third is about to enter this phase. Once these three STPs successfully complete their trial runs, they will also comply with the latest standards.
In addition to this, pipelines are being installed to distribute treated water. Once these pipelines are laid and the three STPs are tested, a larger volume of treated water will be available. This will help reduce the demand for fresh water. It’s important to note that no industrial unit is allowed to operate without a properly functioning effluent treatment plant.

As for the establishment of an Online Real Time Continuous Emission Monitoring System (OCEMS), the report clarifies that no industry in Chandigarh falls under Category 17 or is considered highly polluting.
This report was submitted to NGT following an order issued on August 17, 2023. In this order, NGT had directed all state pollution control boards and committees to submit reports regarding the functioning of ETP/CETP/STP.
